During the past couple of decades extensive research has been conducted in renewable energy hybrid systems. As a result, wind solar hybrid energy systems have become more popular and limelight of sustainable energy research. At present, the technology in this area has been developing very rapidly specially in the manufacturing sector producing new equipment with many patent rights. The main aim of this review paper is to re-examine the theoretical frameworks and mathematical modeling techniques used in hybrid energy systems. Computer simulation methods and associated software tools, cost optimization and sizing of hybrid energy systems, application of fuzzy logic and control systems were analysed and opportunities for further research identified. Paper presented an overview of research and development work over the last ten years and proposed suggestions for future research.
